We're happy to answer any specific travel questions you have,
but here are our general tips:
Traveling to Maine
There are two major airports in Maine: Bangor International Airport (BGR) and Portland International Jetport (PWM). The Portland airport offers more flexibility, more affordable flights, and better on-the-ground travel infrastructure. Bangor and Portland are both vibrant Maine cities and offer lots to explore.
Flying into Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is also a great option. There are several ways to get to Maine from Boston: by bus (using Concord Coach Lines or C&J Bus Lines); rental car; train (from Boston's North Station via the Amtrak Downeaster); or air (Cape Air). Traveling around Maine
We recommend renting a car while visiting Maine, as public transportation options are very limited, especially outside of the Portland area.
Driving up the coast from Portland in the summer can be very pleasant, especially if you follow Route 1 after Brunswick. Watch out for traffic delays on the Maine Turnpike or around Wiscasset on Route 1 during certain peak travel times. If you're planning on going to the remote corners of the state, be prepared for spotty cell service and grab a map to bring with you. |
