Take them onboard for the one hour and fifteen minute ferry ride to Carver’s Harbor on Vinalhaven. Once off the ferry, head to the northwestern head of the island on our bikes for a lunch at Brown’s Head Light. While there, head down to the shore to see evidence of volcanic ash droplets called lapilli. Then, heading south, making a two stops mid island we will visit two to three other sites with evidence of ancient volcanic activity. If working, we will visit a working stone cutter. Heading back into town we will visit the Vinalhaven historical society museum, followed by a visit to pyroclastic pillows along the southern shore of Vinalhaven Island. We will then head back to the ferry terminal for our ride back to the mainland. Trip departs at 8:15 am and returns to Rockland by 4:30 in time for a nice dinner on your own in the area.
